Musicals of All Time. In a letter to Sullivan, Gilbert Suggested
that a Japanese Musical could afford for Picturesque scenery and
costumes and for unusual music, and that nothing of the kind had
ever been attempted in England before. The next day Sullivan began
work on "The Mikado"...The Mikado ran for 672 performances in its
initial season and was by far, and still is, the most popular of
all the Gilbert & Sullivan repertoire
